connecting mind and body

Why is movement and body awareness so important?

So often our lives become busy and we forget the little things.
Where are my car keys? I haven't talked to ..... in forever. Oh wow I've started naming the dust bunnies.
The weeds are taking over, and what, I have a little toe?!

It is easy to become disconnected from ourselves. Daily stress, injury, or trauma can cause us to focus on everything except our own bodies. We tend to forget how we react with the world around us and how important our bodies are.
Being aware of our movement patterns helps us to identify restrictions, points of strain, and areas of repetitive injury in the body. Retraining our movement patterns can assist the body in healing as well as prevention of future injury.

What can I expect from a session?

Using yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises I will help you explore ways to reconnect with your physical and subtle self. The sessions will be slow, deliberate, and relaxed. Focus will be placed on respecting your body in it's current state.

I will never ask you to move your body in a way that is painful or otherwise uncomfortable for you. Communication is essential to ensure your level of comfort during a session.

Music may be used during certain exercises while others may be completely silent.
After each session you will have a variety of exercises to practice in your own time. Home practice is important to continue the benefits of movement sessions. Basic anatomy will be discussed during sessions to allow you an understanding of the purpose and benefit of exercises.

Detailed study of structure and function of the body or yoga philosophy can be prepared upon request.

I'm not all that flexible, can I really do yoga?

Remember that the goal of yoga is not to become a pretzel. Yoga literally means 'union' and classes will be designed to create union between your mind and body and in turn yourself with the world around you.
Traditional Hatha yoga asanas (poses) will be utilized, along with other body movement, breathing exercises, and focused meditation.

Sessions will be used to encourage functionality and healing in the body. The body will adapt and become more flexible through continued movement and breathing. This flexibility is not always seen in 'pretzeling', rather acknowledged through greater freedom in structures and daily activities.

What do I need for this class?

No materials are needed for classes. Only an open heart and willingness to explore.
Please prepare a space large enough to twirl around with your arms outstretched.
I encourage you to wear nonrestrictive clothing to allow for maximum comfort in movement.
Yoga mats and props will be provided.
